Traditionally attributed / early-research-supported properties:

Cognitive function and brain health (its signature association) — lion's mane contains compounds called hericenones and erinacines that can stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein essential for neuron growth, repair, and new connections. This is where its "smart mushroom" nickname comes from.

Memory and mild cognitive impairment — the most-cited human research is a small Japanese study of adults 50-80 with mild cognitive impairment, where those taking lion's mane for 16 weeks showed improved cognitive scores versus placebo — but scores declined again once they stopped taking it, suggesting any benefit may not be lasting. A separate study in people with mild Alzheimer's found 1g daily for 49 weeks significantly improved cognitive test scores versus placebo.

Healthy adults show less effect — notably, when tested in already-healthy adults with no cognitive decline, results were underwhelming, suggesting lion's mane may do more for people with some cognitive impairment than for someone already sharp.

Neuroprotection (early/animal stage) — animal and lab studies suggest lion's mane may help protect against Alzheimer's-related damage and support nerve repair after brain injury, though this hasn't been established in humans.

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity — well-documented at the compound level; the mushroom is rich in antioxidants and contains ergothioneine, though translating this into a specific human health outcome is still early.

Gut health — some research suggests a prebiotic effect, potentially supporting gut bacteria balance.
